Why This Tour Has a Perfect 5.0/5 Across 685 Reviews
A perfect 5.0/5 across 685 reviews is statistically unusual for any tour experience. The reason is specific: Ernesto. Ernesto is a history professor at the University of Mexico who has been giving Teotihuacan tours since he was 15 years old. He knows the site comprehensively — not just the standard narrative but the contested interpretations, recent discoveries, and the connections between Teotihuacan’s material culture and the civilizations that came after it.
Julianna B. (April 2026): “Our guide, Ernesto, was so knowledgeable and very personable. He said he’s been giving tours since he was 15 years old. You can tell how passionate he is about the history behind it all. We first stopped at the cave restaurant (get the enchiladas) — STUNNIN’. Then went to an obsidian workshop where we learned how it can be crafted and then had a mini tequila tasting. 10/10.”
John S. (March 2026): “My family of 4 (2 teenagers) thoroughly enjoyed our day spent with Ernesto, who is also a history professor at the University of Mexico. Very sweet, and super informative, Ernesto proved terrific at keeping everyone engaged. The cave breakfast was cool, and surprisingly good, as was the short visit to a local producer of obsidian and mezcal. Ernesto did a fantastic job describing the importance of Teotihuacan culture as it relates to Mexico’s rich history.”
Eduardo and Paola also appear in reviews with consistent 5-star praise. The maximum group size of 13 means the guide-to-group ratio enables a level of engagement not possible in groups of 40–100.
The Four Stops
XIBALBA Cave — Traditional Mexican Breakfast (50 min)
Natural volcanic cave — enchiladas, juice, coffee, fruit
The first stop is breakfast inside XIBALBA — a natural volcanic cave adjacent to the archaeological site. The breakfast is a traditional Mexican meal: enchiladas, fresh juice, coffee, and fruit. The cave setting is the draw — geological formations, cool air, dramatic natural environment. Maira M. (March 2026): “We got picked up on time from our hotel and were taken to a cave breakfast at XIBALBA. We got the enchiladas which were great and filling. Very cool experience eating in the cave. After we went to a shop where they talked to us about the local agriculture and gave us samples of mezcal to try.”
Taller de Artesanías Finas el Sol — Obsidian + Mezcal (30 min)
Authentic artisan workshop — not a tourist shop
An obsidian artisan workshop where the guide covers how obsidian was extracted, worked, and traded by the Teotihuacan civilization — the volcanic glass was the city’s primary export commodity, traded across Mesoamerica. The workshop demonstrates traditional working techniques alongside museum-quality replica pieces. A mezcal tasting follows. Judith W. (March 2026): “Nice breakfast in cave, good tour guide. The artisan shop prices seemed high at the time, but were better than other products we saw later on our trip.”
Zona Arqueológica — Sun and Moon Pyramids + Avenue (1h30)
Full guided coverage including Calzada de los Muertos
The core pyramid experience: the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, and the Avenue of the Dead walked in full. The guide’s academic background means coverage includes the contested interpretations: why the city was abandoned, who built it (the Nahua? an earlier civilization?), and what recent tunnel excavations have changed. Elizabeth W. (March 2026): “The pyramids were so much larger and more impressive than I realized from the pictures — and there were a lot of little surprises along the way as well.”
Templo de Quetzalcóatl — Partial Climb (50 min)
Third pyramid — most tours skip this
The Temple of the Feathered Serpent (Temple of Quetzalcoatl) — the third major pyramid at Teotihuacan, often skipped by tours that run short on time. This tour specifically allocates 50 minutes here. The facade features the most detailed sculptural work at the site: alternating carved heads of Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc in near-original condition. Claire R. (May 2026): “This was a good taste of Teotihuacan. Our favourite was the last pyramid, the feather serpent — so glad this tour included that!”

Awesome tour with Ernesto — very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the pyramids. We got picked up on time and were taken to a cave breakfast at XIBALBA. We got the enchiladas which were great and filling. Very cool experience eating in the cave. The pyramids were amazing — take your walking shoes, especially if you’re going to climb the Moon pyramid. We were provided with water and an umbrella for our comfort. Overall a great experience — we got back mid-afternoon with plenty of time for evening plans.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Layla B, traveler — May 2026
Fantastic little day trip! Having transport was a huge plus, but starting the day with the breakfast, getting to see a craftsman’s workshop, and seeing all that the pyramids had to offer was such a well-rounded excursion. Our guide Paola was an absolute gem and filled us with so much insight and passion. She really made the trip worthwhile!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Claire R, traveler — May 2026
This was a good taste of Teotihuacan. The cave breakfast was a nice way to meet fellow travelers and a lot of food. The tour itself was good, just the right amount of info. Our favourite was the last pyramid — the feathered serpent. So glad this tour included that!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emilienne D, France — March 2026
We had a wonderful guide Eduardo, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the ruins. The day was also very nicely planned with breakfast, a visit to a local artisan, and then the three Teotihuacan pyramids. Everything was perfect — but our day went an hour and a half longer than expected, so be prepared for that possibility!
